What happened after graduation?
After high school, I attended Sam Houston State Teacher College 3 1/2 years; majored in Education and minored in English.  I substituted at Aldine during the spring of 1962.  I met Charles Boyd in college. He graduated in 1960 and went to the Naval School of Preflight in Pensacola Florida where he was commissioned as a flight officer in the U S Navy.  We became engaged during this time and married in 1962.  He was stationed at the Naval Air Station at Barbers Point in Hawaii. He flew the Pacific airborne surveillance barrier from Midway to the Aleutians to detect unknown east bound aircraft flying from Russia.  I attended the University of Hawaii and completed my BS degree.  I substitute taught some and did a lot of group activities with other Navy wives while Charles was gone.  When he returned each month from Midway after flying 8 missions and over 120 flight hours he got 3 working days of crew rest before reporting back to duty.  We did a lot of sight seeing then.  While there we saw so much change and growth in Honolulu.  The airport was a small wooden facility when I arrived there.  I stepped out of the plane on gravel and walked into the airport, After a year, work began on the huge International Airport with beautiful Chinese, Asian and American gardens.  Luckily they kept the flower lei stands for several years. But when we returned to Hawaii to celebrate our 30th anniversary and again 15 years later for a cruise around all of the islands, we were saddened to see that all of the flower lei stands were gone.

We lived at Pearl Harbor about 20 miles from Barbers Point Naval Air Station.  The Dole pineapple cannery was not far away from where we lived and the smell of cooking pineapple was always in the air. We had no air conditioning nor heating in our home but it was comfortable year round.

On our first anniversary we flew over to Kauai, the flower isle.  One of my college friends flew over during one summer and spent two weeks with us.  Then Charles' mom came over when our little daughter was born and I was stuck in the hospital 4 weeks.  All went well, finally, and we returned to Houston late in the summer of 1964.

I taught public school for seven years, (Helen Nicholson's daughter was one of my students), had a little boy and then stayed home several years.  In 1978 we moved out to the 1960 Spring area near where I grew up.  I began teaching at Northland Christian School.  Charles was working for Texaco in their computer service department.  He developed Texaco's world wide payroll system and maintained the human resource personel systems.  Each summer we took a camping trip to one of national parks in our little tent camper.  Our favorite was the Grand Canyon where we hiked 7 miles down to the Colorado River then camped over night at the Indian Gardens.  I was huffing and puffing when we got up to the rim! Teri and Brent had been out an hour and half before we emerged.  They were standing there watching us, eating a big double dip ice cream cone !!.

Charles retired from Texaco and opened a golf driving range, "Tee Wood" near Tomball which he kept for five years.  He then began work for Eastern European Mission as financial officer. EEM prints and distributes Bibles to Eastern Europe countries and Russia.  Dr Skovorodnikov, former Russian Minister of Education in Russia over a large region known as Altai. He approved EEM placing Bibles in all the school libraries of that region. The region is larger than the state of Texas. Today many other countries are begging for Bibles including the Ukraine.

Our daughter and son both graduated from Harding University.  Teri received a BS in nutrition and Brent went on to the UTHSC in San Antonio and now practices pediatric dentistry in Temple, Texas.  He has three sons and Teri and Joe have a son and daughter, our only granddaughter.  After 34 years, I retired from teaching and find that I stay busy all the time.  Last year for our 45th anniversary we returned to Hawaii and took a cruise around all of the islands via Norwegian Cruise Lines.  It was so much fun, the Luau on Kauai, the entertainment at night aboard ship and the food service was first class.

Charles plans to retire working in March this year and I'm sure he will stay busy on the computer which he loves.  He gave up playing golf at Northgate last year.

Additional thoughts and comments
We are looking forward to the class reunion.  I can hardly believe it's been fifty years!  (nor the age I am!!)   But I thank God I've had a wonderful life, being on insulin 59 years with few problems.
